Recently I received a Sprinkles cupcake mix and decided to give it a test run. Sprinkles, aside from being those lovely colorful sugar things that you top a confection with, is the name of a popular bakery in California whose cupcake prowess has become nationally recognized and just basically exploded. Kind of like the Tollhouse cookie effect.
In any case, the mix that was given to me was the dark chocolate mix. It comes in this cute little tin with the dry ingredients, the recipe, and Sprinkles’s signature candy button toppings, called “dots.”
Don’t mind my bag of cream cheese icing…we’ll get to that later.
So anyway, Sprinkles provides the mix and you supply 2 eggs, 10 tablespoons of unsalted butter, and 2/3 cup milk (but here’s a secret – I used 1/3 cup milk and 1/3 cup buttermilk because we were running low on regular milk; I’m convinced this added an incredible “wow” factor to the texture and flavor).
Once they were cooled, the recipe in the can recommends making a chocolate frosting, but I wasn’t sure I could handle that much chocolate, so I opted for a cream cheese frosting with advice that I found here.
See those cute little candy buttons? (The Christmas-colored ones are from my cupboard; the brown and blue ones are Sprinkles’s and would make a lovely decoration for a boy baby shower, don’t you think?)
Anyway, the cupcakes were quite delicious. Just the right balance of sweet and moist. Alex and I had run a 5K the morning before we made them and had to fight not to eat the whole dozen to “reward” ourselves.
Just kidding. Sort of. Anyway, to add to my ideas for stocking stuffers for your food-loving friends, this mix (or any of the other Sprinkles flavors they sell en masse) would be a welcome addition to anyone’s stocking – maybe with some decorative paper cupcake liners – and if you’re lucky, maybe you will get to partake in the delicious goodness.
